Sinusitis

Sinusitis:

sinusitisChronic sinusitis occurs when the sinuses, which are the spaces inside the nose and head, become swollen and inflamed for a period of three months or longer, despite receiving treatment. This common condition disrupts the normal drainage of mucus and results in nasal congestion. Breathing through the nose may become difficult, and there may be swelling or tenderness around the eyes.

Causes:

Chronic sinusitis can be caused by various factors, such as infections, nasal polyps (growths in the sinuses), or inflammation of the sinuses’ lining. It is also known as chronic rhinosinusitis and can affect individuals of all ages, including adults and children.

Symptoms:

The symptoms commonly associated with chronic sinusitis include nasal inflammation, thick and discolored discharge from the nose (runny nose), postnasal drainage (mucus flowing down the back of the throat), nasal congestion leading to difficulty in breathing through the nose, pain, tenderness, and swelling around the eyes, cheeks, nose, or forehead, as well as a reduced sense of smell and taste.
Additional signs and symptoms may include ear pain, headaches, aching in the upper jaw and teeth, coughing or throat clearing, a sore throat, bad breath, and fatigue. While chronic sinusitis and acute sinusitis share similar signs and symptoms, acute sinusitis is a temporary infection of the sinuses often associated with a common cold. The signs and symptoms of chronic sinusitis persist for at least 12 weeks, but individuals may experience several episodes of acute sinusitis before developing the chronic form. Fever is not a typical symptom of chronic sinusitis, although it may be present in cases of acute sinusitis.

Ayurvedic Treatment:

Nasya Karma or Nasyam is a unique and effective detoxification therapy mentioned in Ayurveda, which can be highly successful in treating sinusitis. It involves the administration of medicated oil, powder, or fresh juice through the nostrils to clear the accumulated Kapha, thus preventing recurrence.
