Shilajit is found in a sticky form, tar-like resin that oozes from the cracks of the mountains, which was formed over centuries due to decomposition of plant and microbial matter. It consists of a wide range of minerals (around 84), including fulvic acid, humic acid, selenium, zinc, iron, and many other important minerals for human body. The exact composition of shilajit may vary depending on the source of origin.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study was conducted to test the effect of purified Shilajit on testosterone levels among healthy men aged 45 to 55 years. The participants were randomly assigned to receive either 250 mg of purified Shilajit twice each day or a placebo for 90 days. The treatment with Shilajit significantly increased total testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEAS) levels, free testosterone compared to placebo, while gonadotropic hormones (LH and FSH) levels remained stable.
