Building up our immune system for a better tomorrow

Building up our immune system for a better tomorrow (7th November 2020):
Of late we have been hearing a lot about strengthening our immune system. If your immune system is robust then the dreaded Covid 19 might just spare you. We keep hearing this from doctors across the world. Majority of us overlook the fact that how genuinely effective our immune system is at protecting against diseases. Our immune system is responsible for warding off viruses and germs from entering our body. It is our body’s defence system.

As the seasons change, the healthier your defence system is the better your body will be able to address seasonal changes.

Physical symptoms like runny nose are sometimes the result of your immune system reacting to the environment. Lack of sleep can wreak havoc with your system as well. Too much or too little sunlight can also have a say in your immune system’s performance. Continually living with too much negative stress keeps triggering the body’s fight or flight mechanism, potentially leaving the body wide open to health challenges. (also read The Importance of Being Positive) New research says that immune systems may respond differently depending on the seasons. Providing your body with the necessary amounts of vitamins and minerals, every day allows for an effective and efficient immune system response.

It is imperative that we strengthen our children’s immune system from the very beginning. A healthy child makes a healthy adult. Adults can also incorporate these healthy natural immunity boosters in our daily diet. As they say it is never too late to start leading a healthy lifestyle.

Elderberry –Elderberry extract is one of the best general immune system boosters out there. Give your child Elderberry syrup 2-3 times a year, specially before the flu season.

Vitamin C – Eat 2-3 servings of vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables every day. Berries, kiwis, bell peppers, dark green vegetables, lemon, oranges are all great sources of Vitamin C.

Zinc – zinc is an important immunity boosting mineral. Protein rich food such as shell fish, legumes, eggs, nuts and seeds, red meat are all Zinc rich. Doctors are prescribing zinc tablets everyday as a potential medicine to keep Covid 19 at bay.

Probiotics – When we keep a healthy gut, germs have less of a chance to grab a hold. Probiotics are good bacteria that help in maintaining good intestinal health.

Water – keep your system well hydrated at all times. Juices, tea, soups do notmake upfor the recommended minimum 3 litres of water per day.

Vitamin D –Cannot stress enough how important Vitamin D is for our system. Not only does it strengthen the immune system but also strengthens our bones.

Bone Broth –an excellent source of amino acids that fight inflammation. It’s a great preventive measure at the start of the flu season.

Garlic and Ginger– never underestimate the power of these super foods. These help to fight any type of virus attacks and infections. Add in your food, or just make some ginger tea. Garlic can be eaten raw as well or in the form of prescribed pills.
